Press-Telegram girls basketball Top 10 rankings heading into CIF-SS quarterfinals, Feb. 13

The Press-Telegram’s rankings of the top high school girls basketball teams in the Long Beach area. The CIF-Southern Section playoffs resume Wednesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL TOP 10

(Records through Tuesday, Feb. 13)

1. St. Anthony (22-7)

The Saints advanced to the CIF-Southern Section Division 2AA quarterfinals with convincing wins against Great Oak and Crean Lutheran last week. St. Anthony is led by a trio of experienced guards: seniors Ryann Bennett and MeLaiah Joseph and Kadence Lloyd. The Saints will play at Ventura on Wednesday night for the opportunity to earn a spot in the CIF-SS semifinals and an automatic CIF State playoff bid.

2. Lynwood (18-11) 

The Knights, who are on an eight-game winning streak, advanced to the CIF-SS Division 1 quarterfinals with hard-earned wins against Culver City and Esperanza last week. Lynwood, who is led by senior forward Taliyah McFerson, will play at Brentwood on Wednesday night.

3. Long Beach Poly (20-10)

The Jackrabbits season is over after a 64-48 loss at Orange Lutheran in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs on Feb. 10. Long Beach Poly won the Moore League title with an undefeated 12-0 record, highlighted by wins against No. 5 ranked Lakewood and No. 8 Jordan.

4. Paramount (21-8)

The Pirates season is over after a 68-54 loss against Portola in the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs om Feb. 8. Paramount, who was led by senior guard Kaylani Polk (UC Riverside signee), finished second in the Gateway League behind No. 2 ranked Lynwood.

5. Lakewood (25-5)

The Lancers, who are led by junior guard Nyemah King and senior forward Cristina Jones, advanced to the CIF-SS Division 2A quarterfinals with against Northview and Xavier Prep last week. Lakewood will host Beckman on Wednesday night.

6. Los Alamitos (24-6)

The Griffins lost to Beckman in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 2A playoffs. Los Alamitos won the Surf League championship.

7. Cerritos (21-9)

The Dons, who are led by senior forward Onyekachi Nwanze, advanced to the CIF-SS Division 3AA quarterfinals with wins against Yorba Linda and Dos Pueblos last week. Cerritos coach Marcus Chinen and Nwanze led their team to the D3AA championship game in 2022. Cerritos will play at Oak Hills on Wednesday night.

8. Jordan (21-8)

The Panthers, who are led by senior guard Asia Edwards, advanced to the CIF-SS Division 3A quarterfinals with wins against Mayfair and La Serna last week. Jordan will host St. Monica Prep on Wednesday night.

9. Downey (16-13)

The Vikings lost 49-39 to Mark Keppel in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 2AA playoffs. Downey finished third in the Gateway League.

10. Whitney (19-10)

The Wildcats lost 65-40 to Calvary Chapel in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 2A playoffs. Whitney finished second in the 605 League.
